POTP - Can you muster up some more??

Hi friends,

Kim here. Ugh!!!!! We need some more POTP at our house and also some help. Yes, I need YOUR help!

Lily Belle has a problem that resulted in an emergency trip to the Vet this afternoon (right as they were closing.)

When we woke up this morning she was perfectly fine. Absolutely NOTHING wrong. Fed them their breakfast as Rolf, Grandpa Bob and I were going out the door.

When we came home 2.5 hours later from running our errands I immediately noticed Lily's face. Looks like she lost a boxing match.

I grabbed her and laid her down on the couch. Her right eye was practically swollen shut, it was weeping a bit and she had a huge goose egg under her eye.

I got right on the phone with our Vet and they said they were just closing for the day but would stay open to look at Lily.

She was able to open her eye somewhat on the ride to the Vet.

Her Doctor said it could be from a bee sting (perhaps from when she went outside this morning) or could be from a tooth abscess. Couldn't be sure what was causing it.

Got a shot of steroids while there. She's on Benadryl twice a day, eye drops and ear drops in the right ear as it was inflamed. If she would tolerate a warm compress I was to try that too.

She was stung by a wasp once as a baby and she screamed bloody murder for about an hour when that happened. I don't think she was stung this morning.

Has anyone even dealt with an abscessed tooth and had these type pf results from it?

She's been sleeping a little more than normal today but that's what Benadryl does to her. She's eating fine, no problems with pooping or peeing either. The Vet said that even if she has a bad tooth it may not even be bothering her.

I've been sitting with her all day on the couch and she doesn't appear to be in any pain. I just feel horrible for her. By late tonight, the swelling has gone down maybe 5%.

We are all keeping a real close eye on her (no pun attended). We have to check back in with the Vet on Monday. If there is no change, they want to do an X-Ray on her teeth.

Any ideas or suggestions??

Hugs,
Kim

P.S. Rolf is doing remarkably well! He really enjoyed getting out of the house today for the first time (other than going to the Dr's) and running errands with Grandpa Bob and me. I will say, he makes a horrible "back seat driver!"

  1. Sending POTP. I've seen allergic reactions like that but I have no experience with dogs having tooth problems. K had serious allergies, including to tick bites, but the steroid shot would bring down the swelling pretty fast... I am thinking of you.

  2. Oh the poor little dear. I've never had a pup with an abscess, but the horses get them from time to time - very painful and lots of swelling. Our Great Dane used to get terrible allergies whenever she get near evergreen shrubs, but that always showed up on both sides, not just one.

  3. POTP! It looks like an allergic reaction; Nola had a much less severe reaction to the Lepto shot the one time she got it. I'm not a vet of course though. Vibes headed your way! So glad Rolf's feeling better!

  5. Mom Kim here The only one here with a tooth abscess was me - if that is what is going on with Lily I know the swelling from an abscessed tooth could have caused the eye to close - especially since it happened while you were gone, meaning she was maybe sleeping and her eye was closed anyway.. I'm also thinking that in people it takes antibiotics to really bring down the swelling if it is an abscessed tooth (abscessed tooth = infection) If it were an allergy then I would think the shot would have had reduced the swelling more by now. And I also know there is not much if any pain with an abscessed tooth. And if had been a bee sting - the shot would have helped more I would think and I'm sure you would have - noticed some change before you left plus Lily would have been making noise. Does she play much with Muffin - do they do any zoomies in the house? Could she have maybe hit that area on something? However, I know I'm not a vet and I'm just sort of comparing her situation with a human reaction - I still would give the abscessed tooth a stronger possibility rather than an allergy. UNLESS by the time you read this the swelling has gone down more.

So good to read that Rolf is doing better and that he was able to get out - I know that feeling - feeling almost like a normal day, sort of.

  7. POTP in progress. I don't know about teeth stuffs, but I do know about bites. I was bit by a spider and had a similar reaction. Meds cleared it all up fairly fast.

  8. Get Rolf a blindfold.

We're sending POTP. We haven't had any problems like that. kendra once had an abscessed tooth, but SHE didn't even notice it. Luckily the annual check up picked it up quickly.

  11. No help here for tooth problems, but we can't help but wonder if it could have been a spider or bee bite. Those spiders can really be nasty. We are so hoping that today shows much improvement for Lily. As for POTP, there is always more to share.

  13. Oh, Poor Lily!!!!! The only time we've had to deal with swelling like that was the last time (years ago) when Max got his rabies shot. But Lily didn't get any shots so it can't be an allergy to shots. We have all our paws crossed for her that she recovers quickly. And we're also sending lots of hugs to everyone.

  19. My Sisters Doxie had the same thing! Her vet said the exact same thing, but we don't think it was a tooth, because it went down on its own. Every so often is gets swollen again. The vet wanted to do all kinds of tests and an exploratory dental, but his teeth were fine and he had just had his teeth cleaned a few months before this happened. My sister decided to wait. Hope Lilly is doing better. Saundra slr5060@gmail.com

  23. I just read about Lily's vet visit. I sure hope she is feeling better. I know you must be worried about her. I will check in tomorrow to see if in progress has been made with swelling going down. Hope it was just a bee sting and not an abscessed tooth.
