Grandpa Bob got run over by a reindeer

WARNING - NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART - WARNING

From Lily Belle:

This morning started out in our typical fashion. Mommy got up, made coffee and we snuggled on the couch as we read your blog's.

Today was baking day as Mommy had 3 fancy Christmas desserts to make this morning.

She started with the egg's in the mixer and the chocolate melting on the stove in the double boiler.

While the egg's were getting ready to be mixed and the chocolate slowly melting on the stove, I decided it was time for her to take me outside to do my thing.

So Mommy sits down on the patio and I'm doing my (ahem) thing, Grandpa Bob must have woken up and opens the door to come outside to see what we're doing. Next thing we know he looses his footing and CRASH! Grandpa Bob takes a nose dive and falls ass over tea kettle backwards. Mommy jumped up from her chair and I, Lily Belle, damn near crapped right there! There is blood pouring out of his left hand. Mommy opens the door and screams for Daddy who comes running. Muffin that little stinker, runs and hides under the bed.

Daddy and Mommy get Grandpa Bob up on his feet and Mommy runs for a kitchen towel. They escort him into his bathroom down the hall as the drops of blood fall onto the white carpet. Mommy takes one look at the BIG cut on the outside of his pinky and said he needs stitches. Of course, an argument ensues. "I don't need no stitches" "it's only a scrape" "I'm hardly even bleeding." Mommy has come to realize that old people don't listen. They know better. (Just like when they were teenagers.)  Mommy grabs the first aid kit and starts wrapping and wrapping and wrapping. There are 4 wounds total. Daddy is trying to get Grandpa Bob dressed as he was in his nighty.

Mommy and Grandpa Bob head off to the hospital. (Yes, she remembered to turn off the stove before she left in case you was wondering.)

Mr. Triage Nurse (well hello there handsome!) was very kind and very understanding. Hey this IS Florida, the home of old people. This wasn't his first rodeo and we know with Grandpa Bob in town we may even see Mr. Handsome Triage Nurse again.

Then they met Mr. Mark the Doctor. He said that Grandpa Bob did a "good job" cutting open his pinky and indeedy it was going to require stitches. Then Grandpa Bob starts in "I told her I needed stitches" "I told her I was bleeding really bad"....... Mommy just laughed! Dr. Mark took one look at Mommy, nodded his head and winked at her. Good thing it wasn't his first rodeo either dealing with the elderly.

After all was said and done, Grandpa Bob got 7 stitches in his pinky finger, a splint, 3 bandages on the other wounds, antibiotics, lot's of gauze wrapping it all up and a good scolding from Dr. Mark to USE HIS WALKER!

We have to return to the hospital on Saturday for a recheck of his pinky and for a dressing change. They want to check the flap of skin to see if it is living or dying. (Grandpa Bob will have the stitches removed on January 2nd in NY while he is there for the Holiday's. He flies out alone on Monday. Don't worry about him flying alone. Mommy puts a name tag and phone number on him.)

When they got home from the hospital this afternoon, Mommy duct taped Grandpa Bob to a chair and went on her merry little way with her baking.

It breaks Mommy's heart to see Grandpa Bob getting older and older each day.

Hugs,
Lily Belle

  4. Oh my, I hope Grandpa Bob feels better very soon. All those cuts and wounds must hurt. I know what you're going through, as I'm in a slightly earlier phase with my dad, and I wish that I could make time stop zooming forward. Take care.

  11. We are so sorry Grandpa Bob is getting older. Lady worries that her parents time to be old will come too soon. We are glad Grandpa Bob wasn't more seriously hurt and that he was brave and got stitches (Lady has a phobia of them and wouldn't do it). Lee and Phod

  13. DID you check UNDER the chair to see if PUdDLEs evil Chrissy was hiding there, just waiting to trip Grandpa Bob????? Just wondering. You are such a lovely daughter to Grandpa Bob and whether he tells you that every day he knows it in his heart. We have a Grandpa Russell who is a bit like Grandpa Bob but he still lives with Grandma Diane, Mom says he always tries to pay her money when she takes time off of work to take him to the Dr. .....she never takes it ...it makes her sad also but she is also so blessed that they are still with her. She is sending you out a very special daughter to daughter hug!
    Merry Christmas

  14. I think duct tape is a good idea. Some folks are just stubborn -- and since Grandpa Bob trained your momma, I know he's VERY stubborn! I'm glad it wasn't worse and hope he stays happy and healthy through the holidays!

  17. We are most thankful that Grandpa Bob is mostly okay, but very thankful that in all that chaos you also remembered to turn off the stove. That would have been really bad.

  18. Oh, Lily Belle! Your mom is the bestest at keeping her heart open! Thank goodness Grandpa Bob survived the rodeo only needing stitches. But, really, my mom agrees. It is really hard seeing loved ones age and it is not for the feint of heart. As Mom's great-grandma said at the age of 96, "I have passed the finished line and passed go."

    Sending you so much love.
